"When You Find Me" - 10 Themes

Character

The character here that the picture/screenshot portrays is the little sister, Lisle. It provides us with her characteristics. One of them them being stubbornness. Her stubbornness to find her mom is shown through the questions she keeps asking Aurora, her older sister.  I feel that this allows the audience to have a connection with Lisle and allow the audience to make assumptions on what will happen on the future. A round character allows the films to be much more engaging which I liked very much about it.

Setting

The use of the plays off with Lisle's imagination of trying to get to heaven to try to find her mom. This setting plays a key part as it seems to always appear in her dreams and it allows her to see to her mother. It plays as the "gateway" to heaven and provides the setting of where the story gets its charm. The setting again plays with the imagination of a little girl, making it easy to relate to. I like the usage of this setting and I feel it is very important to the mood and feeling of the film.

Backstory

This picture presents the backstory between the two sisters and their "feud". The picture shows the mother or Aurora and Lisle that had just died. This provides the motivation for Lisle to find where her mother went after the last meeting at the hospital. The backstory allows us to have a peek into the girls' lives and lets us know why they are the way they are.

Goal

These two pictures show Lisle's goal to find her mother in heaven. The different style of film highlights this scene because it is completely different from any other part of the film. I feel that it puts the audience into the mind of Lisle , the reason why it looks animated and was put through a creative mind. The vast background contrast the seemingly small foreground, showing how the search might be hard but it is possible. The smile in Lisle provides us with a positive outlook on the scene.

Time

The time picture uses the environment to shape the time of the scene. Although the film is set in the present, the clothing follows the original picture which gave it a sense of a different time. The outside light also gives the sense of time to make people think that it is either about to be morning and it just turned to nighttime. The lamp provides with a little bit of light to highlight the focus of the scene. The time of the scene gives it a different type of mood and atmosphere if it was done in any other time of day.

Relationship

This scene show the relationship between the two sisters after Lisle reveals what their mother had said. The shallow focus on the two characters highlights the two sisters and prevents distractions from the backgrounds. The scene also closely follows the photo by showing them crying with each other. The close up further intensifies the feelings in the scene and makes the relationship between the two sisters even stronger.

Obstacle

The obstacle portrayed here is the gate to the cemetery. It was an obstacle that Lisle could not clear herself. She needed the help of Aurora to clear the obstacle. The gate portrays a dreary setting because of the lighting and the fact that it led to a cemetery. Lisle gets over the obstacle with the help of Aurora. After the obstacle is crossed, Lisle's mission goes to full plan. The obstacle's crossing allowed her to see her mom, even though it wasn't real.

Mood

The mood of these shots show their  sadness and dreariness. The overlook of the lively city contrasts the emotionless face that is in the foreground. The cigarette added acts as a stress reliever, strengthening the feeling of sadness within the character.

The Unknown

The unknown produces a weird experience. The tree shows us an imaginary place of the unknown. The tree is unnatural to the things that we normally see causing us to question the location of this place. The place gives us a sense of questioning because of it is unknown.. The tree presents heaven  and the paradise it provides in the white wasteland.

Discovery

I picked this picture because her emotion expresses discovery. She has finally discovered the way to her mother in heaven. The discovery after the obstacle gives it a bigger meaning. After the controls had lit up, she had found a way to her mother. She will finally get to asee her mother, whereever she went.
